Intrepid Shakespeare Company
is a San Diego Shakespeare company dedicated to presenting Shakespeare to the community in an intimate, accessible, affordable way through passion, imagination and language by focusing on the text and using Shakespeare's words and imagery to tell the story.

Intrepid announces its 2010 season of four plays in traditional repertory:

TAMING OF THE SHREW & KING JOHN

in rep April 23 through June 6 @ Theatre Inc.

TAMING OF THE SHREW

Featuring Sandra Ellis-Troy and Jenni Prisk as Petruchio and Kate.

Intrepid Shakespeare Company is thrilled to be mounting Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy with two of San Diego’s most passionate and talented female theatre artists.  A bold, modern and timely look that focuses on the strength of the human spirit and the struggle and triumph of being true to oneself.  Directed by Shakespeare veteran and Artistic Director of Theatre Inc., Douglas Lay.  Taming of the Shrew will begin preview performances April 16th and open April 23rd, Shakespeare’s Birthday.

KING JOHN

King John is a highly entertaining political thriller with some of Shakespeare’s most interesting characters. Rarely produced, King John explores the backroom deals that take place between world leaders at major public events and the arrogance of privileged people. Directed by Intrepid co-founders Christy Yael and Sean Cox, featuring Tom Hall as King John.   Last produced in San Diego at the Old Globe in 1968, Intrepid Shakespeare Company is excited to present this too much ignored play. Preview performances May 7th at 8pm and May 8th at 2pm. Opening May 8th at 8pm and running through June 6th.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING & RICHARD II

in rep November and December @ Theatre Inc.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

The second half of the 2010 season will open with Shakespeare’s sharp, smart comedy about the battle of the sexes and what it takes to make love happen. Much Ado About Nothing is the first of a cluster of three comedies written in the space of about a year that represents Shakespeare’s comic genius at its’ height.  Featuring some of the bard’s most beloved characters, Intrepid will present this incredible comedy in rep with Richard II.  Director TBA

RICHARD II

One of Shakepeare’s most subtle and poetically enriched plays and the only play in the canon written completely in verse. Richard is the first play in the tetralogies and contains the crime that will unleash a bloody civil war two generations later.  Before the hunchbacked Richard III, the War of the Roses of Henry VI, the English victory of Henry V or the tall tales of Falstaff in Henry IV, there was the fall of an anointed king and the usurping of the English throne. Directed by Shakespeare veteran and Artistic Director of Theatre Inc., Douglas Lay, and featuring Intrepid’s Executive Artistic Director Sean Cox as Richard II.

Bringing Shakespeare to life for
elementary, middle, and high school students.

Intrepid takes condensed versions of Shakespeare plays to elementary, middle and high schools.  We also offer workshops to schools to help students understand and connect with Shakespeare.  In 2010, we will be touring 50 minute productions of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and ROMEO AND JULIET.  Intrepid is also touring A DAY OF SHAKESPEARE - in one day students receive six in-class workshops and a 50 minute performance of one of our two touring shows.  The workshops are interactive and engage students in Shakespeare's stories, characters, language and poetry.  All workshops involve student participation through improvisation, speaking the language and playing with Shakespeare's verse.  Getting the students actively involved - up on their feet speaking the text - is the most immediate, accessible, and exciting way to engage them in the play.

It is our hope that exposing students to Shakespeare through live theatre will make learning fun, accessible and serve to enrich each student's life and create the next generation of theatregoers.  There is no substitute for the shared experience of seeing Shakespeare live.
